Sumo, everyone knows it, but have you ever seen a live match with your own eyes? Last year before the start of covid I had the chance to see sumo at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Hall. A friend of mine was planning to go with a group of friends and asked if I'm also interested to join. I've never watched sumo live so I was definitely in! While knowing Sumo only vaguely, I had to read up on it. If you plan to watch Sumo someday, this article might give you a brief introduction.
Sumo is a national sport of Japan where two wrestlers called Rikishi 力士 fight each other in a ring called Dohyō 土俵. The sign for the match to start is when both wrestlers have both fists on the ground. The bout ends as soon as one Rikishi gets pushed outside of the ring or touches the ground with any part of the body except the bottom of their feet.
Being a Rikishi, a professional sumo wrestler, requires full dedication of one's life. Rikishi are required to live in a stable called heya and follow strict traditional rules to be able to compete in the tournaments.
If one wants to participate in the professional tournaments one must join a stable. When joining one must be between 15 and 23 years old and if joining after junior high school at least 165cm tall and at least 65kg. Whereas one can apply directly to a stable, most Rikishi are scouted by the stables after they graduate from high school.
Sumo originally appeared in the Heian period from 794 until 1185. The reading "sumo" of the kanji 相撲 comes from the word sumau or sumafu meaning to compete or fight. Whereas the kanji itself originates from "Sumai no sechi" 相撲の節 which was a wrestling competition at the imperial court during the Heian period. The kanji of "sumo" 相撲 convey the meaning of striking each other. So other combinations like "udesumo" 腕相撲, literally ude 腕 (arm-) sumo for arm wrestling are also possible.
Each professional holds a rank which is published in a Banzuke 番付 before each official tournament called Honbasho 本場所. There are multiple rank-divisions in sumo: the top division Makuuchi 幕内 with fixed 42 wrestlers who are ranked depending on their previous tournaments performance with the Yokozuna 横綱 as the two top-ranking wrestlers.
The Jūryō 十両 is the second highest division with 28 wrestlers and the next lower ranked division is the Makushita 幕下 with further 120 professional sumo wrestlers. Except for the highest rank Yokozuna 横綱, each tournament allows a Rikishi to rise but also to fall in rank.
There are currenly six professional Honbasho sumo tournaments held every year. Each tournament lasts 15 days with every Rikishi from the Makuuchi division having one bout each day. I was attending the second day of the first Hatsubasho 初場所 tournament in January 2020. The tournament day starts at 8:30 with lower division rank ending with the highest ranking bouts lasting until about 18:00. We joined in the afternoon at about 14:00 when the second Jūryō division matches were about to start. During all the matches it's allowed to eat and people bring plenty of food to eat in the box seats. We brought some food to share like Mikan mandarines, senbei, beer and sake, but also bought bentos sold at the Ryogoku Kokugikan itself which were very delicious.
The biggest event of the tournament was when Endo, lower ranked with the rank Maegashira won the bout against the Yokozuna Hakuho. An interesting tradition is that the Zabuton cushions of the box seats will be thrown in the ring whenever a lower ranked wrestler wins against a Yokozuna. It's not allowed to do so, but people can't help themselves so it ends up in everybody throwing their cushions. However, it's good that this tradition is at the end of the tournament because the floor is pretty hard to sit on without cushions.
After the tournament we went for dinner in the area and ate Chankonabe, a famous hot pot dish eaten by Sumo wrestlers to gain weight. After all it was a very interesting day and if you've never seen Sumo live, I can definitely recommend you to watch it!
みんなさんは相撲というのはご存知だと思いますが、自分の目で見たことありますか？去年、コロナが拡大する前に、両国国技館で相撲を見るチャンスがありました。友達が他の友達と行こうとして誘ってくれてました。相撲はまだ見たことないからぜひ見たいと思いました。しかし、相撲のことをほとんど知らなかったから、いろんなことを調べました。もしいつか相撲を見に行きたかったら、ぜひ参考になればと思います。
相撲というのは力士が二人土俵で相手と戦う日本の国技スポーツです。二人の力士が両拳を床に置いたら始まる合図です。一人の力士が土俵から押された又は足の裏以外体が土俵に触れた瞬間に取り組みの決着がつきます。
力士は、試合だけではなく、日常生活も力士でいます。相撲部屋に住んで伝統的な厳しいルールを守らないと大相撲の競技興行に出られません。大相撲に参加したいなら相撲部屋に入門しないといけません。入門するためにはいろんな条件があります。年齢は中学校卒業で15歳から23歳未満です。中学卒業生なら身長は165センチ以上で体重は65キロ以上です。自分で直接、相撲部屋に応募することも出来ますが、大半の力士は新弟子にスカウトされます。
相撲は平安時代(794~1185)に生まれました。相撲の「すもう」の読み方は「すまう」又は「すまふ」に基づいて、相撲のように戦うという意味を持っています。相撲の漢字は「相撲の節」という宮中で行われた年中行事に基づきました。相撲の意味は相手と戦う意味を持ち、腕相撲という言葉もあります。
大相撲の力士の順位は大相撲の本場所の前に番付で発表します。大相撲にはいろんな階層がありますが、最上位は幕内です。幕内では力士が42人がいて、その力士が前の取り組みによってその順位が決まります。
次の階層は十両です。こちらは28人の力士がいます。後は幕下という力士が120人がいる階層です。幕内の最上位はもちろん横綱です。その他の階層もありますが、横綱以外は、本場所の結果によって力士の順位が上がる又は下がることがあります。
現在は毎年本場所を六回行います。本場所は15日間行われ、幕内の力士が毎日一回取り組みをします。私は令和二年(2020)両国国技館にある一月の初場所の２日目を見ることが出来ました。本場所は格下の階層で朝８時半から始まり、夜６時ぐらいに最上位の取り組みで終わります。午後２時ごろにちょうど十両の取り組みが始まるぐらいに、私は会場に入りました。食べながらや飲みながら取り組みを見るのは全然問題ですから、観客がいろんな食べ物を持ってきて食べながら楽しんでいます。私達はみかん、せんべい、ビールや酒をシェアしたが、両国国技館の特別な美味しい弁当も買ってみました。
初場所の２日目の最大な出来事は前頭の遠藤が横綱の白鵬に勝って金星を獲得した瞬間でした。横綱が格下の力士に負けた時に、観客が土俵に座布団を投げる「座布団の舞」という習慣があります。実は投げてはいけないですが、我慢できなくて、みんな投げてしまうんですよね。座布団の舞が本場所の最後のところであってよかった、座布団なしの床がかなり硬い。
大相撲が終わったら両国で力士が体重を増やすために食べるちゃんこ鍋を食べてみました。とても面白くて印象的な一日でしたが、相撲はまだ見たことがなかったらぜひおすすめします。
